History Websites

History is the art of making sense of what came before us, and the best sites do it without preaching. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History throws open a vault of original letters, speeches, and paintings that let you read the past in its own handwriting. SNESMusic.org is a different beast entirely: it preserves the chiptune scores of Super Nintendo games, a sonic history of the 1990s that no textbook would touch. The Modernist Journals Project digitizes little magazines from the early 20th century, so you can watch literary movements as they happened. That range is the point. History is not one story but a thousand arguments, and these sites give you the raw materials to join them.
